Village Vision and VIU Design Visioning Workshop September 2016

The Village Vision Project

In 2011, the Local Trust Committee held a public meeting seeking Gabriolans' ideas for the village core. Since then there has been significant development in the village core but unfortunately not within the context of a comprehensive and sustainable village core plan. To accelerate the planning process, Sustainable Gabriola and the Gabriola Island Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with community volunteers and in communication with the Local Trust, have implemented a comprehensive, community-wide planning process aimed at creating a sustainable village core plan.

The objective of the Village Vision Project is to create opportunities for Gabriolans to share their ideas about the future of the Village core and ultimately to create a long-term plan to guide the sustainable evolution of the Village over time. The intention is to create multiple opportunities for community dialogue, to examine a broad range of ideas, and ultimately to create a consensus on the values, principles, and attributes of a sustainable Village core. This process is intended to be complementary to the work done by government bodies such as the Islands Trust (IT), the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI). Elected officials and staff of government agencies will be invited to participate in all aspects of the planning.
